A crater is usually imagined as a scar.
Lonar is different.

Wildlife in Abundance
Here, a violent impact that struck the Deccan basalt tens of thousands of years ago has, over immense stretches of time, become a world of forest, water, wildlife, temples and human memory.
From the rim, Lonar appears almost impossibly still. Descend into the crater, however, and another landscape begins to reveal itself.
Bird calls rise through the trees. Water moves through perennial springs. Ancient basalt darkens beneath the forest. The lake rests at the centre of it all, its unusual chemistry supporting life adapted to conditions found nowhere else in quite the same combination.
This is the Lonar Wildlife Sanctuary — a protected landscape built around one of India's most extraordinary geological formations. The sanctuary covers about 365 hectares, including the approximately 77.69-hectare Lonar Lake, and protects the crater, its surrounding forest and the habitats that have evolved within and around it.

A Landscape Born From Impact
Lonar began with an event almost beyond imagination.
A high-velocity meteorite struck the Deccan basalt and excavated a roughly 1.8-kilometre-wide crater.
Scientific estimates vary depending on the dating method, but research cited in a 2023 study places the age of the lake at roughly 52,000 years. The result is an unusually well-preserved impact structure in basalt — a geological setting of exceptional scientific interest.
But the impact was only the beginning.
Over thousands of years, water accumulated within the basin. Forest grew across its slopes. Springs emerged from the surrounding rock. Organisms adapted to the lake's highly saline and alkaline conditions.
What began with planetary violence became an ecosystem.
That transformation is perhaps the most remarkable thing about Lonar.

Life in Unusual Water
Lonar Lake does not behave like an ordinary freshwater lake.
Its waters are characterised by unusually high salinity and alkalinity, creating a distinctive environment for microorganisms and algae. The lake supports communities of cyanobacteria, plankton, anaerobic organisms and salt-loving microorganisms adapted to its unusual chemistry.
At times, the lake itself seems to reveal this hidden life.
In 2020, Lonar famously shifted from green and brown tones towards pinkish-red. The colour was associated with halophilic archaea, microorganisms capable of thriving in highly saline environments and producing pigments that can alter the appearance of the water.
For a moment, the lake became visually extraordinary even by Lonar's standards.
But the phenomenon was a reminder of something deeper: the lake is not simply a body of water sitting inside an ancient crater. It is a living chemical ecosystem.
A Forest Inside a Crater
The lake is surrounded by southern tropical dry deciduous forest, creating an unexpected contrast with the dry landscapes beyond the crater. Trees including babul, umbar, arjun, tendu, jamun and banyan form part of the sanctuary's vegetation.
From the crater rim, the forest can appear as a green band surrounding the lake.
Once you descend, its scale changes.
The canopy closes in. The basalt walls rise behind the trees. The lake begins to disappear and reappear between vegetation and rock. The soundscape changes with every step.
The crater that seemed so complete from above becomes something much more intimate from within.
And this forest is not empty.
A Sanctuary for Wings and Wild Things
The Lonar Wildlife Sanctuary supports an impressive range of fauna. Sources cited by the sanctuary literature record 12 species of mammals, around 160 species of birds and 46 species of reptiles, alongside amphibians and other forms of life.
Among the larger animals reported in the sanctuary are sloth bear, nilgai, wolf, chital and barking deer, while other studies also note wildlife such as wild boar, monkeys and leopard in the surrounding forest.
For birdlife, the crater becomes especially important during the cooler months.
Migratory birds arrive between roughly October and March, and the wetland forms part of the movement corridor used by migratory species along the Central Asian Flyway.
This is one reason Lonar rewards an early start.
Before the heat builds, the crater is at its most alive. Birds move between forest and water. The light settles softly across the basalt. The lake begins to catch the morning sky.
You realise that the crater is not simply something to look at.
It is something to listen to.
Water, Forest and Sacred Ground
For centuries, the crater has also been a sacred landscape.
Ancient texts and cultural traditions have associated Lonar with pilgrimage and mythology, while temples, springs and ritual sites surround the lake. A 2023 study identifies 27 temples, three monuments, seven temple tanks and three inscriptions within the crater landscape, underscoring how deeply human history is woven into the natural setting.
At Gomukh, clear water emerges through a cow-shaped stone opening and flows as a perennial spring. For local communities, the spring carries religious significance; for the visitor, it is also a striking reminder of the hidden hydrology beneath the crater.
Further within the landscape are temples such as Motha Maruti, Kamalja Devi and Daitya Sudhan.
The result is unusual.
In Lonar, a walk through a wildlife sanctuary can become a walk through sacred history without any clear boundary between the two.
Forest leads to stone.
Stone leads to water.
Water leads to mythology.
And mythology leads back to the crater.
Why Lonar Became a Ramsar Site
The international significance of this wetland was formally recognised in 2020, when Lonar Lake was designated a Ramsar Site — a wetland of international importance. At the time, it became Maharashtra's second Ramsar site within a year of the state's first designation.
The Ramsar recognition acknowledged more than the lake's unusual origin.
Lonar's importance lies in the combination of its geology, hydrology, biodiversity and surrounding habitats.
It is a closed or endorheic basin, enclosed by crater walls and forested slopes, with highly saline and alkaline waters supporting specialised biological communities.
The designation also carries a responsibility.
A place can be internationally important and still be locally vulnerable.
Lonar demonstrates exactly why conservation cannot stop at drawing a boundary around a lake.
A Fragile Wonder
The same landscape that attracts visitors is also vulnerable to them.
Research on sustainable tourism at Lonar identifies sewage and wastewater, inadequate waste management, encroachment, forest fires, hunting, wood collection and littering among the pressures affecting the crater ecosystem.
This creates a difficult paradox.
Lonar needs to be discovered.
But it must not be consumed.
The more people understand the crater, the greater the opportunity to build a tourism economy around conservation, local livelihoods, education and responsible exploration. The alternative is a destination where increased footfall slowly damages the very landscape people came to experience.
A 2023 study by Archana Mishra and Rekha Maitra argues for precisely this kind of approach through geo-tourism and the broader Geopark model — connecting geology with ecology, archaeology, culture and local communities rather than treating each attraction as a separate stop on a sightseeing itinerary.
That idea feels particularly natural at Lonar.
Because here, almost nothing exists in isolation.
The Future of LonarThe future of Lonar should not simply be about bringing more people to the crater.
It should be about helping people understand why they came.
Imagine a visitor arriving for the meteorite, staying for the birds, descending for the forest, stopping at a centuries-old shrine, listening to a local story, learning why the water behaves differently and leaving with a deeper understanding of the landscape — and with money spent locally, supporting the people who live around it.
That is more than tourism.
It is stewardship.
A sustainable approach could allow local guides, researchers, hospitality providers, craftspeople, conservationists and small businesses to become part of the destination's story. The Geopark model proposed in the research on Lonar specifically emphasises this relationship between geological heritage, education, conservation, community participation and sustainable economic development.
Lonar does not need to become another crowded monument on a tourist circuit.
Its greatest strength may lie in remaining something slower.
Something people have to enter.
Something they have to walk through.
Something that reveals itself gradually.
A Living Memory of the EarthThere is a strange poetry to Lonar.
The crater was created by an event that happened before human memory.
The lake has developed a chemistry unlike most waters around it.
The forest has grown inside a geological wound.
Birds cross continents to arrive here.
Ancient temples remain among the trees.
Stories of gods and demons have attached themselves to the landscape.
And now, modern conservation recognises the lake as a wetland of international importance.
Different ages. Different ways of understanding the world.
Yet they all occupy the same crater.
The meteorite created the bowl.
Time filled it with water.
Life filled it with movement.
People filled it with meaning.
And today, the responsibility is ours to make sure that the story continues.
Lonar is not simply a crater to be seen. It is a living landscape to be understood — and protected.
